THE JAY
same image & card title AQUARETTE 9218 BRITISH BIRDS AND THEIR EGGS & reward cards, postcard images for HUDDERSFIELD EDUCATION COMMITTEE crow family, back :- THE JAY, WHICH IS A BIRD OF HANDSOME PLUMAGE, BELONG-ING TO THE CROW FAMILY, IS GENERALLY TO BE MET WITH IN THE VICINITY OF OAK TREES, WHERE IT BUILDS ITS LARGE CUP-SHAPED NEST IN THE LOWER BRANCHES OF A TALL TREE, ALWAYS CHOOSING A SPOT THAT IS THICKLY WOODED. THE NATURAL CALL OF THIS BIRD IS HARSH AND DISCORDANT, BUT IT POSSESSES IN A WONDERFUL DEGREE THE POWER OF IMITATING THE CRIES OF OTHER BIRDS AND ANIMALS. THE JAY IS DESTRUCTIVE TO GAME AND SO IS OFTEN SHOT BY THE GAMEKEEPER. THE EGGS ARE FROM FOUR TO SEVEN IN NUMBER, AND OF A GREENISH-BLUE, SPECKLED WITH OLIVE.
